Canon’s SNAPSHOT of the neighbourhood
We had a phenomenal response to our Caxton Snapshot of the Neighbourhood competition. The judges – our Canon professionals – had a tough time selecting the winner … but here it is.
His winning photo was taken early in the morning in the neighbourhood. According to Andrew, it captures the determination in people to wake up early and must walk to work trying to make a living in these tough times.
Andrew has a passion for photography and says it’s because it allows him to ‘capture a moment forever’.
He matriculated last year at Hoërskool Zwartkop in Centurion. He dabbled a bit in photography before deciding earlier this year that he wanted to start his own photography/videography business. These days he’s a full-time video editor for a production company and does photography in his spare time.
“The neighbourhood where I stay is a great place. I stay on the edge of the suburb, right next to the Old Johannesburg Road, so we have quite a bit of traffic going past our house. But the deeper you move into Clubview West, the quieter it gets. It also has a lot of history,” Andrew says.
He stumbled upon the competition by accident as he was cleaning the grill with some newspaper and saw the competition details in the Rekord newspaper.
“It took about a week of planning different poses and scenarios, but on the day of taking the photo I decided to just stroll around the block. When I got to the park close to my house, I saw the trees with their bright orange leaves and it just looked amazing,” Andrew explained.
The next moment a lady passed him by and proceeded down the road.
“I caught the lady perfectly in a strip of sun shining through the trees,” he adds.
What a prize!
Andrew Thomas won a Canon PowerShot SX620 HS camera … which comes with a wrist strap, a battery pack and charger and an AC cable, worth R2 999. This compact, super-zoom camera allows you to get closer to the action, allows you to easily connect, share and shoot remotely with WiFi and NFC, create stunning full HD movies at the touch of a button and play and experiment with your creativity.
