Pink bubbles for Valentine’s Day
And nothing says romance like a profusion of sparkling pink bubbles … so here’s a selection of our favourite rosés … from affordable options to blow-the-budget spoils!
Krone Rosé Cuvée Brut is a paradox of rich, berry fruit and refreshing, natural finesse. Salmon-pink, it’s fine and creamy with a punch of juicy, rich berries and is lovely with a creamy prawn and avocado cocktail with spiced lime wedges, salmon with crispy skin crackling and wild rice, or a Charcuterie board featuring Parma ham and prosciutto. Around R120. We also fancy Krone Night Nectar Demi-Sec Rose 2016 – a distinctive style of Cap Classique which is probably the closest in style to the first famous sparkling wines of France a century ago. A subtle salmon blush, this bubbly is all strawberries and cream, with a long, velvet finish, and is fabulous with prawns grilled on hot coals with coconut-lime basting and peach chutney, a sticky pork belly, or strawberry cream cake. Around R120.
Nicolas Feuillatte Champagne, (pronounced Nee-ko-la Fur-yat), is the number one selling Champagne in France and the third biggest-selling Champagne brand in the world. Nicolas Feuillatte Brut Rosé Champagne has a beguiling fragrance of fresh strawberries, raspberries and rose petals. Summer berries and velvet bubbles literally dance on your tongue, and the finish is one of luscious creaminess. We’re loving this one … can you tell? This romantic elixir is best drunk in a duet .. it’s an ideal aperitif or a perfect complement to treats like sushi or smoked salmon. It also marries well with crayfish, Japanese cuisine, not-so-spicy Asian cuisine and mild cheeses, and is just dreamy with some nice dark chocolate, strawberries and cream or a strawberry soufflé tart. Exquisitely attired in pastel pink and jet black, with a gorgeous gift box, you’ll find it at good bottle stores for around R675. Nicolas Feuillatte Graphic Ice Rosé is a Demi-Sec Champagne … generous and fruity, it’s packaged in an eye-catching metallic packaging specially designed to sparkle around the clock … to reflect the rays of the sun and to glimmer in the dark of the night. It’s a delicate coral pink, and tastes of cherry, raspberry and strawberry. Enjoy it on it’s own or with a smoked salmon salad. Around R580.
Bollinger Rosé Champagne (which is beautifully packaged in a splendid gift box, so a lovely pressie … hint hint), is all red currant, cherry, wild strawberry and a touch of spice on the nose, with bubbles as fine as velvet. It’s an absolutely fabulous Champagne, which can be served for afternoon tea, Bollinger-style, is perfect for a picnic on a summer afternoon, as a pre-dinner drink or served with salmon, grilled shellfish, Asian cuisine and fruit-based desserts. A special occasion bubbly, it’s around R1150 at good bottle stores. Equally a special is the Bollinger Rosé 2006, an exceptional Special Edition Cuvée, it is the very first vintage that Champagne Bollinger dedicated exclusively to a rosé. Labelled with metallic rose-gold lettering, the beautiful bottle is housed in a matching rose-gold latticework. It’s delicately perfumed with notes of rose petals, raspberries and quince and has hints of delicious wild berry flavours with lingering notes of tangerine. Around R1500.
Whichever you choose, and whoever you celebrate with, we wish you a fabulously romantic Valentine’s Day. Kiss, kiss.
