Industrially quaint

Nestled in the heart of the capital’s industrial area, lies the cutest and most surprising eatery we ever did see. And the brain behind the concept is none other than our own Corli Botha.

Driving down the busy street, passing factories and businesses we almost feel lost. Can there really be a coffee shop tucked away here somewhere? Then we spot it.

Heavenly smells drift through the air. Butter cream, roasted pork and chocolate. Oh, how we love chocolate. There it is. On the corner of Dykor and Concordia roads, just off one of Pretoria’s busiest streets. We park and blissful aromas of freshly roasted coffee beans draw us in.

Tucked away in one of the busiest yet most unlikely areas in the city, the industrial part of Silverton, Corli’s Kitchen & Road Café is definitely one of our favourite local spots to grab something to eat or just a quick coffee. Everything from the delicious cakes and treats on display to the cheery red umbrellas on the porch have us obsessed. And the cakes. Glorious cakes!
After walking away with the coveted title as kykNET’s Koekedoor season 2 winner, Corli Botha played around with the idea of opening her own coffee shop in Pretoria. She worked from home as a caterer at the time, but thought it was time to get out of her comfort zone and dream big.

“I searched for a space with a suitable kitchen where I can prepare my catering orders and offer customers something a little extra. Friends suggested that I use part of their building and convert it into a coffee shop. It already had a canteen and I just loved the location,” Corli gushes.

Although a bit surprising to some, Corli explains that she specifically chose the busy Dykor road to open her foodie haven on as she immediately fell in love with the vibe. “I’ve always loved the steampunk theme and the fact that I’m now smack dab in the middle of
factories and businesses adds to that vibe.”
The wood and stainless steel tables and chairs, bright red umbrellas, photo frame-adorned wall and décor fits perfectly against the industrial backdrop creating a homey, rustic feel. But don’t be fooled by the street or area, she warns. The food, drinks and treats are all freshly made, but with a gourmet twist. And we can attest, absolutely delicious.

Breakfast options include the Road Café Simple Breakfast consisting of two eggs, bacon and toast, the Full House Breakfast of two eggs, bacon, boerewors, tomato, baked beans, mushrooms and toast, an omelette or Sunrise Croissant or Panini made with scrambled eggs with slices of bacon.

The lunch menu boasts delicious dishes like quiche of the day, lasagne cups, pies, vetkoek and mince, jaffle and mince, soups and pancakes.

Another great option is the gourmet sandwiches served on a panini or ciabatta with your choice of chicken, steak or grilled pork with leaves, cheese, tomato, mushroom and honey mustard sauce. If sandwiches are your thing you simply have to try the biltong ciabatta with cream cheese, biltong and micro leaves. Yummy!

One of the best sellers is the rump and pork steak paninis and we only need one look to see why.

Corli’s Kitchen & Road Café also has delicious grab-and-go meals like wraps, gourmet sandwiches and delicate paninis. There are also daily special deals to suit any wallet. Delivery will soon be available for take-away orders ordered before 11am Monday to Friday.

And then there’s the delicious sweet treats and cakes. Corli is known for her wonderful cakes and we are in total awe of her skills. You simply have to follow Corli’s Kitchen & Road Café on social media to see that we’re definitely not exaggerating. We’re talking four tier red velvet cake, chocolate mousse cakes, vanilla and peach cupcakes, macaroons. Birthday cakes, wedding cakes, special occasion cakes – she does it all.
