What style are you?

What style are you?

When it comes to our hair, most women will spend hours making sure every hair is in its place. There are just so many looks to choose from. Up, down, braided, long, short, curly, straightened, take your pick.

To make sure you look your absolute best this winter, we caught up with the hair professionals at Follicle Hair Atelier to share some of their must-have looks for winter.

Ever heard about babylights? Well, it’s the latest craze and women across the world are trying it out.

This delicate highlights, created using very fine and small sections of hair is the perfect option for anyone not wanting to go all out with colour. The colour technique is used to mimic the subtle,
multi-dimensional colour seen in children’s hair.

It’s a low-maintenance colour in the sense that when it grows out the lookbecomes even softer, but because the highlights are done so fine there is little to no regrowth line.

“Babylights can be applied to any hair colour or type of hair. The beauty of this hair colouring technique is you can play with so many colours from very blond to rich and creamy caramel and toffee tones,” says Cornel Moolman, co-owner, creative director and staff trainer at
Follicle Hair Atelier in Pretoria. All you need to decide is what colour would suit your skin tone better.

But, warns Cornel, before you even think about colour it is important to take care of the condition of your hair. “To maintain your hair colour, and have healthy hair it is important to look at
using the correct home care. Brands like Kevin Murphy, Joico and Hannon have a wide variety to suit every hair need possible,” explains Cornel.

What does she suggest?
A thicker more moisturizing conditioner in winter is always a great start, to help get rid of the static in your hair. Want to create the illusion of blonder, lighter hair? “A purple based shampoo is fantastic to eliminate unwanted warm tones and pigments,” she says.
The bob is an old hairstyle favourite that remains popular this season. Whether you prefer long, short or the lob, there is a style that will suit your personality and needs. “You can wear your hair above or below the collarbone.

Layering is also taking a bit of a backseat and the trend is to stick to one length – texture is however still a must,” Cornel explains.

Look for products that are easy to use and will add a bit of texture to the hair, without breaking the bank. With just a few key products you can go from silky straight to a more textured beach look in minutes.

Most women associate braids with their days in school uniform but there are so many ways to wear them. Just think about that annoying fringe you are trying to grow out. Simply braid it for an elegant yet funky look. Need to wash your hair but ran out of time? No problem. Wear your hair in a braid – no one will even notice.

Braids are also perfect for keeping long hair in place and tangle free when you sleep. For the perfect wavy look, wash your hair before you go to bed, dry only 90 percent, make a few braids, go to bed and the next morning you’ll have the most beautiful soft waves. This saves time and you will look great.

• Brush dry hair and comb wet hair. Wet hair is 30 percent more elastic.

• Drying: Always air-dry your hair on a medium setting to 80 percent then start blow drying with your brush.

• Styling: Styling tools and heat protection go hand in hand. Most of the tools go up to 230 degrees Celsius.

• Dry shampoo: A fantastic option to skip a wash or for someone on the run “mind the pun”.

• Braids: Braid your hair from ear to ear to make sure your hair stays out of your face but is still in tact.

• SPF: We often only care for our skin and tend to forget about our hair. In oil or spray form any UVA and USB protection will protect your hair as well as your colour.

• Hairband and elastics: Metal free is the way to go. Bobbels are great if you do not want a line in your hair when taking it out.
